1. IIT Kharagpur

Established in 1951, IIT Kharagpur is located in West Bengal.

IIT Kharagpur is the first IIT to be established in 1951. The institute was established after India's independence in 1947 to train engineers. The institute was established as the Eastern Institute of Higher Technology in May 1950. In 2019, it was awarded the Institute of Excellence status by the Government of India.

 

2. IIT Bombay

Established in 1958, IIT Bombay is located in Maharashtra.IIT Bombay was the second Indian Institute of Technology established in 1958 with the assistance of UNESCO and contribution from the Soviet Union. On July 9, 2018, IIT Bombay was awarded the Institute of Excellence status by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development along with 5 other institutes of India.

 

3. IIT Madras

Established in 1959, IIT Madras is located in Tamil Nadu. IIT Madras is one of the eight public prestigious institutes of India. Established in 1959 with technical and financial assistance from the former government of West Germany, it was the third IIT established by the Government of India. IIT Madras has been consistently ranked as the top engineering institute in India by the NIRF ranking system in 2016.

 

4. IIT Kanpur

Established in 1959, IIT Kanpur is located in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

The institute was started in December 1959 in a room in the canteen building of the Harcourt Butler Technological Institute in the Agricultural Park, Kanpur. In 1963, the institute shifted to its present location, on Grand Trunk Road near Kalyanpur area of Kanpur district.

 

5. IIT Delhi

Established in 1961, IIT Delhi is located in Delhi.IIT Delhi was inaugurated in August 1961 by Humayun Kabir, Minister of Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs. It is one of the 23 Indian Institutes of Technology created to become India's centers of excellence for training, research and development in science, engineering and technology.The area of the present campus is 320 acres. 

 

6. IIT Guwahati

Established in 1994 and converted as IIT in 1995, IIT Guwahati is located in the Amingaon area of North Guwahati Village area in the state of Assam.It is the sixth Indian Institute of Technology established in India. IIT Guwahati was established by an Act of Parliament in 1994 and its academic program began in 1995. In 1998, the first batch of students was accepted into the Master of Technology program through GATE.

 

7. IIT Roorkee

Established in 1847 and converted as IIT in 2001, IIT Roorkee is located in Uttarakhand.

It is the oldest engineering institute in India, and was established in 1847 as the College of Civil Engineering in British India by James Thomson, Lieutenant-Governor of the North-Western Provinces, to train working officers and surveyors.On 21 September 2001, an ordinance issued by the Government of India declared it the seventh Indian Institute of Technology in the country and changed its name to its current name,IIT Roorkee.

 

8. IIT Ropar

Established in 2008, IIT Ropar is located in Rupnagar, Punjab.IIT Ropar was established in 2008 by the MHRD. Classes for the academic session 2008–2009 were held at IIT Delhi. The institute started functioning from its transit campus at Rupnagar from 1 August 2009. The foundation stone of the permanent campus of IIT Ropar was laid on 24 February 2009.

 

9. IIT Bhubaneswar

Established in 2008, IIT Bhubaneswar is located in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

The permanent campus at Argul in Khordha district was inaugurated by the current Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on 24 December 2018. IIT, Bhubaneswar was established on 15 August 2007, on the 60th anniversary of the country's independence, when the then Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh, announced the expansion of the IIT system in the country.

 

10. IIT Gandhinagar

Established in 2008, IIT Gandhinagar is spread over 400 acres of land on the banks of the Sabarmati River in Gujarat. IIT Gandhinagar is one of the eight IITs declared by the MHRD in 2008. The institute began functioning in a temporary campus at Vishwakarma Government Engineering College, Chandkheda, directed by the IIT Bombay.The complex is India's first 5 star GRIHA LD complex to reduce negative impact on the environment.

 

11. IIT Hyderabad

Established in 2008, IIT Hyderabad is located in Kandi village on the outskirts of Sangareddy district in Telangana. IIT Hyderabad was established by the Ministry of Education, Government of India under the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2011. In July 2015, it shifted to its 600-acre permanent campus in Kandi, Sangareddy.

 

12. IIT Jodhpur

Established in 2008, IIT Jodhpur is located in Jodhpur in the state of Rajasthan. IIT Jodhpur was first announced by the central government in July 2007, although the formal announcement was made in 2008, with IIT Kanpur guiding IIT Jodhpur. In July 2008, the first academic session of IIT Jodhpur began at the IIT Kanpur campus.

13. IIT Patna

Established in 2008, IIT Patna is located in Bihta, near Patna, Bihar.

It is one of the second generation IITs established by an Act of the Parliament of India on August 6, 2008. IIT Patna started its new session (from July 2015) at its permanent campus at Bihta. Earlier, the institute was operating in a temporary 10 acres (4.0 ha) campus in Patliputra Colony, Patna.

 

14. IIT Indore

Established in 2009, IIT Indore is located in Madhya Pradesh.On 17 February 2009, the foundation stone of IIT Indore was laid at its permanent campus located in Simrol, Indore, Madhya Pradesh. The institute functioned under the guidance of IIT Bombay in a temporary campus at the Institute of Engineering and Technology of Devi Ahilya University from 2009 to 2010.

 

15. IIT Mandi

Established in 2009, IIT Mandi is located in the Kamand Valley of Mandi city in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh. The foundation stone of IIT Mandi was laid on 24 February 2009. The first batch of 97 students was admitted in July 2009 and classes began on 27 July 2009 at the Advisory IIT, IIT Roorkee.

 

16. IIT (BHU) Varanasi

The IIT-BHU is a public technical university located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Established as Banaras Engineering College in 1919, it became the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University in 1968. It was later named Indian Institute of Technology in 2012. It is located inside the Banaras Hindu University campus.

 

17. IIT Palakkad

Established in 2015, IIT Palakkad is located in Palakkad, Kerala. In July 2014, as proposed in the 2014 Union Budget of India, IIT Palakkad was established as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India in 2015. 22. IIT Jammu

Established in 2016, IIT Jammu is located in Jammu and Kashmir. IIT Jammu is a public research university located in Jammu, India.
