NEET-UG Exam Likely to Go Online: Education Minister Hints at Major Changes

25 Nov, 2024

Hello Students, Big changes could be on the way for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG). Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan recently hinted that the exam might move from paper-based to computer-based testing (CBT). This shift aims to make the examination process more secure and efficient.

The move is being guided by recommendations from a special Radhakrishnan committee, formed after allegations of NEET paper leaks. The committee has proposed a phased transition to online exams to reduce security risks and ensure fairness.

Key Suggestions from the Committee

  • Shift to Online Exams: Introducing computer-based tests to minimize issues with paper leaks.

  • Hybrid Model: Digital transmission of question papers to exam centers, while responses are recorded on paper.

  • Improved Security: Reduced physical handling of question papers to eliminate vulnerabilities in printing, storage, and transportation.

A third-party monitoring group, led by former ISRO chief K Radhakrishnan, has also been set up to oversee the National Testing Agency (NTA) and ensure smooth implementation of these changes.

Why the Shift to CBT?

The new format is expected to:

  • Enhance exam security.

  • Reduce risks of paper leaks.

  • Provide a more transparent and robust testing process.

The Health Ministry, which plays a key role in the NEET exam, is actively being consulted for its feedback. NTA will continue to conduct the test, and a final decision will be based on consensus among all stakeholders.

This shift towards online testing could be a game-changer, ensuring a smoother and fairer experience for millions of NEET aspirants across India.
