According to media reports, the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) for admission to government medical colleges for the session 2024-25 has broken its registration record for the ninth consecutive year. 24 lakh candidates have applied for NEET-UG which is 3 lakh more than in 2023-24. NEET-UG remains India's biggest entrance exam, surpassing CUET-UG 2023 by more than five lakh registrations.
The number of registrations for the NEET-UG entrance exam has seen a significant increase of 3 lakh compared to last year, the highest jump in seven years.
However, the addition of over 6,000 seats in government colleges for the upcoming academic year has reduced competition slightly, resulting in a ratio of 42.2 candidates per seat, the lowest in eight years.
The first big jump in NEET-UG registrations was 11.3 lakh in 2017 when it crossed the 10 lakh mark, from eight lakh in 2016. Subsequently, except in the two Covid years (2020 and 2021), the growth in applications has been consistently high.
